Iris Makaton Training offers a range of Makaton courses. From Levels 1-4, Taster sessions and Know and Grow Makaton.
Training can be offered Face to Face and online (via Zoom).

What is Makaton?
Makaton is a communication programme which uses signs, symbols and speech to support communication. Makaton can play an important role in the development of key communication skills such as listening and attention, comprehension, and expression.
Makaton offers a unique way of supporting people who may have communication difficulties. Using signs and symbols enables people to communicate their thoughts, feelings and needs to the people around them. When using Makaton, signs are used in spoken word order offering extra clues about what someone is saying. Makaton symbols play a key role in supporting communication for people who prefer not to sign or may have limited speech.
Makaton is used by over 100,000 children and adults in the UK as their main method of communication or to support speech. This is supported by their teachers, health professionals, family and friends.

My name is Amber, and I have been an Early Years teacher for over 20 years. I am also a freelance Makaton Tutor based in the West Midlands. I am very proud mum of three wonderful sons who have all benefitted from using Makaton.
I have loved using Makaton to enhance young learners’ communication throughout my role as a teacher, but it was when I became a mum to our first
son that I was able to fully experience and appreciate the power of Makaton!
The impact Makaton had on his ability to communicate his needs, lessen his frustration and convey his feelings to us was incredible. He used signs before he was ready to use words, but Makaton gave him a voice. I knew Makaton could have a such a positive impact on families, settings and communities and I wanted to share this. That is why I became a Makaton Tutor.

Iris was my amazing Nan who sadly passed away following a diagnosis of Lewy Body Dementia in March 2018. She was an amazing communicator who shared her name with an important messenger in Greek mythology who was said to have travelled on a rainbow.
Iris Makaton Training has been named as a loving tribute to her.
